Bid Whist is a classic partnership trick-taking game that promises an exhilarating gaming experience. Played with a 54-card deck comprising a standard 52 cards supplemented by 2 jokers, this game pits four players into two teams, with each player seated opposite their partner. The primary objective of the game is to reach a score of 7 points or more, or strategically force the opposing team into a deficit of -7 points or beyond. Points are accumulated through strategic bidding and winning tricks, known as "books," in the gameplay.
During gameplay, No Trump Bids stand out as a pivotal move that has the potential to double your points regardless of the outcome of the bid, injecting an element of risk and reward into the proceedings.
The Bidding:
The bidding process in Bid Whist follows a structured pattern, with bids circulating the table once, commencing from the player to the dealer's left. Bidders are required to declare a number ranging from 4 to 7, accompanied by one of three suffixes: "uptown," "downtown," or "no trump."
The numerical figure in each bid signifies the number of books beyond 6 that the bidder's team commits to securing. For instance, a bid of 5 implies a pledge to clinch at least 11 books (6 + 5), bearing in mind that there are a total of 13 books at stake, making 7 the maximum attainable bid.
When opting for "uptown" (or "high"), players signal their intent to nominate a trump suit where high cards hold dominance. Conversely, selecting "downtown" (or "low") indicates a preference for designating a trump suit where low cards reign supreme. The "no trump" option eliminates the presence of a trump suit, granting the bidder control over choosing whether high or low cards will hold sway post-winning the bid.
In recent developments, an additional feature now offers players the choice between Easy or Traditional (Hard Bidding) modes. Under Hard Bidding conditions, participants can only view the Kitty Cards subsequent to selecting both the Trump Suit and Direction (Uptown or Downtown) for their hand. Conversely, Easy Bidding empowers players to preview the Kitty cards before finalizing their decision on the Trump Suit or Direction (including a No Trump Bid).
